Hi everyone! I have a relatively new fuel pump in my 88 T/A. It's under a year old (and still under warranty by the shop that installed it should I need to take it back soon). Whenever I drive the car and turn the car off, I hear the fuel pump humming for awhile. Is that normal? I seem to mostly hear it on hot days or after long drives. When I tried researching the problem is it correct that I read that cars also have a relay for the fuel pump that may cause this problem? (Oh and I think the fuel pump on my 01 is also going out too now. That will be the next car to do something about. ) Thanks for any help!

Hi Kristin! It is normal to hear the fuel pump when starting and driving the car. owever, I have found that when you turn the car off, and it still makes noise, it is going out. This happened on Lisa's '91 Firebird before, and it went out. My car, the '89 TTA, just flat out didn't make any noise even when turning the key. We have replaced 4 fuel pumps so far, and never had to do a reley, but that's not to say it can't be that. Usually when you take the car in, they check all the things it could be. And I know what you mean about cars being down, my Lincoln had a blow out last weekend, and two days later, the other tire went in the back yard. The Jeep won't engage the clutch now, so that may be the slave cylinder. Maybe a complete clutch. And just yesterday, the '59 Chevy Apache pickup truck loss the return spring for the starter (the key just turns on, you have to push in the starter floor pedal-it's an old truck). And Lisa's '91 need 2 new tires, as they are almost bald. Oh well, the house is looking good, since that's what I've been spending all my money on. George

I guess for now I'll just keep in mind it could be that it's going out . Meantime I'll need to dig up the receipt - I think I'll have til January to take it back in; so either by choice or necessity (if the pump does die) I'll get it in before the warranty is over. I decided to keep the 01 parked for now since I don't want to take the chance of getting stranded anywhere . Ugh car problems. I hope you guys get your stuff fixed soon too.

I figured something out!! What it means I'm not completely sure!! When the car is off and the fuel pump is running, if I loosen the gas cap there is a whoosh of vapors and the fuel pump instantly stops running. Don't know what that means needs to be fixed exactly , but at least I'm onto the start of knowing something about the cause. Could it be a vent somewhere or maybe I need a new gas cap?

Lisa's car did that just before it went out. We didn't try to remove the gas cap though. George
