On May 30, 2010 a largely unknown chapter of Trans Am history will begin to be told. The story is one that was nearly lost, but obtained by a very dedicated Trans Am hobbyist, and at a considerable cost.
As this chapter is opened and the story told, a small number of Trans Am owners are going to be a part of it all.
That's all for now though <grin>, more info will be forthcoming as we get closer...

When I saw who wanted it, and why, I backed off of bidding for it. I can't wait to see it come to light either. ;D George

Since so many have all but begged for more, I guess I should taunt you all again...
This story involves several intersecting bodies of information and quite a number of people, so suspicions of a simple nature would be wrong.
Some folks who only recognize me for my 301 efforts may not know that I own a number of Trans Ams/Firebirds...
1979 10th Aniv 400/4spd 1980 Back Special Edition (301NA) 1980 Indy Pace car 1981 Black Special Edition (301T) 1981 Daytona Pace Car 1986 Tuned Port TA (305HO) 1990 Firebird 2.8 1997 WS6, Ram Air, LS-1 Trans Am
So I don't ONLY enjoy 301 power.
While I don't mean to agonize, we thought it might be just a little more fun to lead the release like this... That and the project has taken awhile to assemble in a manner that you all would enjoy.
The actual hero in all this isn't me, he's been too busy with the project, but allowed me to put my flare to it...
This is a neat story, and it even has a happy finish.
Stay tuned.

Ok, Thank you for waiting. The reason we picked the date May 30, 2010 was to honor the nature of this chapter of Trans Am history. As you probably know, May 30 is the date of this year's Indianapolis 500. What is now known is which exact 1980 Pace cars served duty on the track and or in the various festivities during the race in 1980. That means that some lucky folks may actually own a real piece of Trans Am history, and of course that their cars are now worth a great deal more than before. The story of how the information came to light is kinda interesting as well, as it was nearly thrown away. A person who worked for the raceway had the insight to save the information and for that many are thankful. So, how do you find out if your car was a track used vehicle? That's easy and free... Just click on over to the 1980 Pace car registry and register your car. The owner and operator of the registry will be able to check your car against the listing and let you know. www.transampacecar.com/registry%20cover.htm And now I should introduce Kevin who is the man that spent a small fortune to bring this exciting information to light. As a dedicated hobbyist Kevin has always had a passion for this particular Pace car and his website celebrates this car to the max. Incidentally, Kevin has detected at least 3 owners on the various firebird forums that own an actual track used Pace car, so if you have one - it's time to check! So, folks, please join me in thanking Kevin for sharing this awesome piece of Trans Am history!!! Thanks Guy, Joe

That is very exciting Joe!
Great news. I know there is always a bit of mystery surrounding festival, pace cars, and pace car replicas. Awesome.
Speaking of 80 pace cars (or 81) have you ever seen a round orange sticker in the window of the festival cars indicating that they were indeed festival cars.
The reason I ask is that I saw an 80 or 81 for sale on craigslist, it was unrestored, and had a vintage sticker indicating it was a festival car.
Edit: After looking through Kevin's excellent website I was able to find the decal on the sail panel of some of the festival cars on the site. So I guess it was real.

Yes, Kev has a rather awsome site. He spent some darn serious money for the list - then turned around and wanted to share it with fellow hobbyists...
I think most folks would have charged for any kind of info.
Considering that owners of cars used by the track are now worth many times more, his kindness is even more impressive.
Since none of the actual TA's used in any of the movies are known to exist, this is one of the very few ways to actually own a piece of history. TA History...

I'm not sure if this is the same guy who worked at Indy or not, but there is a guy who has all the info on the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Ams at Indy, and who drove them around during all the events. Finding out about the 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Ams is alittle bit easier, as they were cloth seats. ;D Us owners of these cars ( as well as 25th and 30th Anniversary cars(whoich are even more easy, as these cars got a build number badge in the car)) are lucky to be able to find out our build number too, thru other sources. Too bad not for other Pace Car replicars, or Anniversary Cars. Thanks for sharing! George

How many of these cars were produced by the factory (Norwood)?
How many were Festival cars and how many were driven on the track?
